This financial assistance served for: productivity enhancement

Quebec boasts businesses that are passed down from generation to generation harmoniously, as is the case for Centre Techno Pneu. Founded by Wilfrid Marquis in 1949, the company is now headed by his son Marcel, who is well assisted by his own sons, Jean-François and Éric. Established in Rimouski for over 50 years, the family business now employs more than 75 people.

The process used—the only one of its kind in Quebec—allows for end-of-life tires to be recovered and given a second life. Since 1997, Centre Techno Pneu has two plants in which it returns these used tires to mint condition: a remould shop to rebuild tires for cars and pick-ups, and a retread shop to install new treads on old truck and heavy vehicle tires.

Technology and know-how have enabled Centre Techno Pneu to set itself apart from the competition while providing a quality product. The tires it manufactures are not only less expensive than conventional tires, but they also require 18 litres less crude oil per tire. With an annual output of 100,000 tires, including retreaded and remoulded tires, this represents a saving of 1,800,000 litres of crude.

Centre Techno Pneu’s expertise enabled it to break into the U.S. market in 1999 and, since that time, its market share has grown every year.

Canada Economic Development: frontline support for Centre Techno Pneu

The funding from CED in 2012 was instrumental in Centre Techno Pneu’s decision to acquire state-of-the-art technology.

“CED served as a trigger, giving us the leverage we needed to consolidate jobs and purchase high-tech machinery. Without this help, the project might not have happened,” said Jean-François Marquis, CEO of the company.

Thanks to this support from CED, in the summer of 2013, Centre Techno Pneu embarked on its new project to increase its productivity and production capacity, enhance its product line and expand into the U.S. market. The assistance served to acquire technological equipment and tools as well as new moulds.

Centre Techno Pneu certainly sets an example for any business that wants to stand out and continue to grow.
