Produits métalliques PMI Inc. is a Bas-Saint-Laurent firm that specializes in the design and manufacture of modular steel buildings, sheet metal products and steel lattice structures. After more than two decades at the head of this company, well-known regional entrepreneur Jean Pouliot decided the time had come to move his operations to bigger and better facilities in order to meet the growing demand for his products. He also wanted to have additional space to design and manufacture a new range of larger-sized products.

A complete restructuring of production

“With our new leading-edge technology and larger facilities, we are now in a position to diversify our range of products, develop new expertise and break into new markets.”

The project was an ambitious one that would require the company to completely restructure its production unit. To succeed, it would need to acquire state-of-the-art metal processing tools and faster, more versatile and more accurate equipment. The work that was once carried out by six separate machines would now be done by a single linear robotic system. This would allow Produits métalliques PMI to substantially reduce its manufacturing time and boost its production.

Canada Economic Development was there to help Produits Métalliques PMI acquire a multi-access digital control centre and bring in new output management and optimization software.

“The shift was major but essential to the growth and expansion of our enterprise,” explained Jean Pouliot. “With our new leading-edge technology and larger facilities, we are now in a position to diversify our range of products, develop new expertise and break into new markets.”

Today, the engineers and technicians at Produits Métalliques PMI are able to carry out turnkey projects thanks to versatile tools that allow them to manufacture their designs in a cost-effective manner. This company, which has created 75 quality jobs, is now seen as a high-performing subcontractor within the North American prime contracting market. All of the ingredients are there to ensure the company’s continued growth and prosperity.
