Home-grown film

Look behind the scenes of films like Screamers 2 or Mr. Nobody and you will find Modux FX, a young Sainte-Thérèse firm whose impassioned team creates the kind of digital special effects that thrill movie-goers of all ages. Founded by Marc Bourbonnais, Yannick Wilisky and Vincent Toussaint—three professionals who had amassed nearly 30 years of combined experience working with some of the best in the business—, Modus FX and its 10 or so qualified digital creators set out to take the film and television production industry by storm.

Saying goodbye to a stable job to launch one’s own company demands a lot of motivation and hard work. To ensure the success of their undertaking, the founders of Modus FX opted to forge a number of strategic partnerships, one of them with Canada Economic Development. With the help of these various partners, the company was able to develop the capacity it needs to meet the high demands of major Canadian and U.S. producers.

Credibility that opens doors

“It isn’t easy to find investors willing to co-finance the operating costs of any new enterprise,” explained Marc Bourbonnais. “One has to be able to convince them of the viability of the project. Support from partners like Canada Economic Development is particularly valuable in this regard, as it gives us greater credibility among our customers and helps us build on our image as an innovative and dynamic enterprise,” he added.

After only a year in business, Modus FX now has 30 employees to its credit and is looking to the future with confidence. In addition to the day-to-day work of digital creation and managing the enterprise, the three young entrepreneurs continue to seek out and land new contracts. The company is now looking at the possibility of increasing its production capacity and prospecting on new markets.

In Laval, Laurentides and Lanaudière, sectors like information and communications technology have been identified as priorities to foster regional development. While these regions already enjoy considerable economic vitality, the creation of innovative firms like Modus FX can only improve the prospects for sustainable employment and strengthen regional economic growth.
