The Recreational Infrastructure Canada program is an initiative of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the national short-term economic stimulus strategy announced in January 2009. Through this two-year funding program, the Government of Canada will invest $500 million in the upgrading or restoration of recreational infrastructure across the country. The objective of this program is to encourage construction and renovation of recreational infrastructure and create jobs for Canadians.
End date: March 31, 2011
Some $175 million of the program’s $500 million budget has already been allocated by the Government of Canada, $40 million of it in Quebec.
Under the program, federal assistance typically covers up to a third of a project’s eligible costs, and may cover as much as half in certain special cases. The federal contribution may not exceed $1 million per project.
The program is jointly administered in Quebec by the Agency, the Ministère de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport du Québec and the Ministère des Affaires municipales, des Régions et de l’Occupation du territoire. The two Quebec departments are the program’s lead players for all funding applications other than those from the First Nations, which are handled through the Agency.
