Richmond, Quebec, June 30, 2010 – Steven Blaney, Member of Parliament for Lévis–Bellechasse, speaking on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of State for Canada Economic Development, together with Monique Gagnon-Tremblay, President of the Treasury Board and Minister responsible for Government Administration and the Estrie region, on behalf of Laurent Lessard, Minister of Municipal Affairs, Regions and Land Occupancy, are pleased to announce that the Town of Richmond will receive $1,848,000 in joint financial assistance under the Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund – Quebec to replace drinking water and sewer pipes under Main Street North (Highway 243) in Richmond.
The project consists of the replacement of water pipes and separation of the combined water system under Main Street North (Highway 243) between St Laurent and Fair streets. The work will involve rehabilitation of the areas directly affected by the work, including repairs to the structure of the street and paving. Some 1,000 people could benefit from the project.
“Replacement of drinking water and sewer pipes in Richmond will benefit residents and businesses in the area of the project. Through this project, we are ensuring that citizens enjoy the quality of life for which our country is famous. The Government of Canada has made it its goal to ensure that every community is equipped with modern infrastructure that is essential to the health and safety of our citizens. Public infrastructure renewal is part of a far-reaching action plan that will allow us to prosper in a healthy environment,” stated Steven Blaney.
“In supporting this project, the Government of Quebec is moving forward to ensure the province’s municipalities have infrastructure that meets their unique realities while fostering sustainable development. By injecting new capital into the Quebec Infrastructure Plan, our government is looking to accelerate the execution of numerous infrastructure projects throughout the province, like this one Richmond, in an effort to improve Quebecers’ well-being, create jobs and promote a high-performance economy. In this way, we are leaving the municipality a legacy of quality infrastructure with which to face the challenges of the future,” added Minister Monique Gagnon-Tremblay.
The project will require a total eligible investment of $2,771,999. The Quebec and federal governments are each providing $924,000, for total government assistance of $1,848,000, and the Town of Richmond is providing $923,999.
The Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund - Quebec is a cost-sharing initiative aimed at funding infrastructure projects in communities with fewer than 100,000 inhabitants. These communities are able to use this assistance to improve infrastructure that is in major need of revitalization, including water treatment plants, water supply systems and cultural and sports centres.
Representing an unprecedented funding commitment by the Government of Canada, the Building Canada Fund – Quebec provides stable and predictable funding to support infrastructure projects. In Quebec, nearly $4 billion will be allocated to that end.
The contribution announced today by the Government of Canada has been awarded through Canada’s Economic Action Plan. To learn more about this plan, visit www.actionplan.gc.ca.
